Kept by the power of God

 The Power of God

1 CORINTHIANS 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
We talk blithely about the Holy Ghost in power, about His mighty power, God is my strength and power, mighty men of power.

The Aramaic word is kowach (ko-akh) which means to be firm. The AV translates it as strength (58), power (47), might (7), force (3), ability (2), and able (2). However, in a lot of scripture these words are used along with power. Thus, God is my strength and power loses a lot if shown as God is my strength and strength. Or this verse from MICAH 3:8 ¶ But truly I am full of power by the spirit of the LORD, and of judgment, and of might, … if it read But truly I am full of might by the spirit of the LORD, and of judgment, and of might.
In Hebrew (a 'word poor' language by some standards), there is no word for 'very', so to emphasise something the word is repeated, which does not read well in translation. By saying God is my strength and strength, the intention is to stress that our God is truly mighty. but I venture to suggest that spiritually there is an additional quality here. It is one of transcendence, of awe... and energy.
PSALM 33:8 Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.
Yes, it means strength and might and force, but with a generous double-portion of Holy Spirit-led wonder that reveals the work as God-breathed and not man-centred.
MICAH 3:8 ¶ But truly I am full of power by the spirit of the LORD, and of judgment, and of might,
When God is going to move, He first fills his people with power.
1 CORINTHIANS 4:19 But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will, and will know, not the speech of them which are puffed up, but the power.
20 For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power.

The preaching of the cross … is the power of God indeed, but it is what the power of the cross preaches to us, not what we as men preach of the cross – which can be the speech of them which are puffed up if we are not led by the Holy Spirit in our words. The Amplified Bible shows 1 CORINTHIANS 1: 18 and 19 as: 18 For the story and message of the cross is sheer absurdity and folly to those who are perishing and on their way to perdition, but to us who are being saved it is the [manifestation of] the power of God.
19 For it is written, I will baffle and render useless and destroy the learning of the learned and the philosophy of the philosophers and the cleverness of the clever and the discernment of the discerning; I will frustrate and nullify [them] and bring [them] to nothing.

Our only hope is to stand by faith in the power of God. And this is clearly shown in
COLOSSIANS 1:20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. {having…: or, making }
COLOSSIANS 1:21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled {in…: or, by your mind in }
22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

In the Old Testament we were shown the promise, and His power was demonstrated in His wrath, but in the gospel the righteousness and the power of God is revealed and made accessible.
EPHESIANS 1:17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: {in…: or, for the acknowledgement }
18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, {his mighty power: Gr. the might of his power }
20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,
21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:
22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

Kept By The Power of God
MATTHEW 10:1 ¶ And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease. {against: or, over }
2 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon [Simeon = hearing], who is called Peter [a rock or stone], and Andrew [manly; a man or husband] his brother; James[Jacob = supplanter] the son of Zebedee[my gift or endowment], and John [Jehovah is a gracious giver] his brother;
3 Philip [lover, or friend of horses], and Bartholomew [son of the furrow (accumulation)]; Thomas [a twin], and Matthew [a gift of Jehovah; from a root meaning to strive or fight] the publican; James [see above] the son of Alphaeus [change or exchange], and Lebbaeus [a man of heart], whose surname was Thaddaeus [large-hearted; courageous];
4 Simon [see above] the Canaanite [zealous; jealous (only of God)], and Judas [he shall be praised] Iscariot [men of Kerioth (cities)], who also betrayed him.

2 TIMOTHY 1:6 ¶ Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.
7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Note the order here. Power comes first, then love, then a sound mind, meaning a mind controlled and corrected by the Holy Spirit. The second and third come from the first. Power comes first of all, and you need the power of God to move in love and a sound or pure mind.
And the power of God is made up from these 5 things

P – PRAISE
JUDGES 1:17 And Judah [praise] went with Simeon [hearing] his brother, and they slew the Canaanites [zealous; from root meaning merchants or traffickers] that inhabited Zephath [watchtower; a city renamed Hormah], and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah [devotion].

O – OVERCOMING
REVELATION 2:26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:

W – WORSHIP or WALK (in the Spirit)

E – ENCOURAGEMENT

R – RESTORATION

All these things when put together reveal the power of God. When we praise Him, we come closer to Him and we become overcomers, who walk and worship the Lord. Thus, we are encouraged, which leads to full restoration; a return to the garden; and this releases the power of the Lord God.
2 PETER 1:2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: {to: or, by }
4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
5 ¶ And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

He does the work in us by giving us the power to be partakers of the divine life. And if you lack these things you become blind, for you walk in darkness.
Give diligence to make your calling and election sure – for if you do these things, you shall never fail.
1 PETER 1:1 ¶ Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
3 ¶ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, {abundant: Gr. much }
4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,{for you: or, for us }
5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

An incorruptible inheritance awaits us – it is already set in place for each one who choose the Lord. And those who choose Him are kept by the power of God – through faith – unto salvation.
Kept by the power of God. Imagine yourself floating in water. Something, some power keeps you afloat. It saves you from drowning. But you can only remain afloat if you give yourself to it. Resist and you sink. Relax, rest and trust... and the power is there to save

Such is the measure of God’s power to the believer in the matter of salvation; salvation from sin. “The Gospel of Christ which is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth.” Romans 1:16. Something more than human power is needed to save the sinner from sin. Divine power is needed. And the very best news that any human being ever heard is, that Divine power is available. The news that there is power that will save from the power of sin is good news, or “the gospel”. Every human being is utterly helpless to deal with sin. But the majority of sinners are more interested in being delivered from some of their sinful habits than they are in being saved from the penalty of sin. To be saved from the penalty of sin means to be saved from the wages of sin, which is death. Romans 6:23.

God demands death for sin. Unless the sinner finds and appropriates the Divine remedy for sin, the death penalty is certain; it is fixed by the just and holy Judge. Apart from Divine merciful intervention, the sinner’s doom is inevitable; Divine judgment inescapable. So far as man is concerned he can do nothing to deliver himself from the presence of sin, from the power of sin, or from the penalty of sin. So far as God is concerned His very character demands justice. The question is, how can the helpless, powerless sinner escape justice at the hands of the God against whom he has sinned? There must be death for sin. Must each sinner die for himself? Is it justice for the innocent to suffer for the guilty” The world says, “no.”

God’s Word declares that “Christ hath once suffered for sins the Just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God.” I Peter 3:18. Then this question, “has the holy Judge the right to be the sinner’s Saviour?” Can He act as Judge and Saviour and be both just and merciful? The world says, “true justice knows no mercy.” But the Just One, who has accomplished the redemption whereby man can be brought to God, was both God and man. The Offended One was delivered for our offenses. He satisfied His own justice by becoming the God-man and receiving the wages of sin; death.

The Lord of Glory was crucified; put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the Spirit. Christ died for our sins: He was buried and was raised again on the third day. He dealt with sin, which he put away by the sacrifice of Himself. Then He abolished death and hath brought life to light in the gospel and incorruptibility to light in the gospel. In this redemptive work Christ proved His Deity, vindicated and satisfied Divine righteousness and justice; and fulfilled His word: “I lay down my life, that I might take it again . . . I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again:” John 10:17 and 18. It must be admitted that such power is Divine power.

God was ever well pleased with His Son; when He was in the bosom of the Father; when He was Jesus of Nazareth in the midst of His people, and since He has raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His own right hand in the super-heavenlies. God manifested His great power in the act of the resurrection and exaltation of His Son. God manifests that same great power, to save from the penalty of sin, any and every sinner who believes this Divine gospel.

There is absolutely no saving message for any sinner in the sinless life and holy example of the Son of God, apart from His death and resurrection. The penalty of sin is death. How could the sinner escape that death penalty by trying to live like Jesus lived? There would be no death penalty in such a struggle; but there would be utter failure; and eternal death after the futile struggle. It is the privilege of redeemed sinners to know Christ in the power of His resurrection; but not until they have escaped the death penalty by identification with Christ, “baptized into His death.”

If the same exceeding great power that God manifested in raising Christ from death to the super-heavenlies is available for the believer to enable him to have power over sin, it would seem that the believer’s defeat could only be the result of his failure to appropriate and apply that exceeding great power. If such exceeding great power is available for the believer, then the believer should be delivered from the power of sin.

ACCOMPLISHED BY GOD’S POWER

“How shall we that are dead to sin live any longer therein?” Romans 6:2. The believer is baptized into the death of Christ, and having been crucified with Him he is raised to walk in newness of life. “Sin shall not have dominion over you.” “Let not sin reign in your mortal body.” Romans 6:4, 12 and 14.

From these, and many other verses, it seems that victory is provided for the believer in Christ and that victory is expected of the believer in Christ. The believer is identified with Christ in death. Christ died unto sin. The believer is positionally and potentially dead unto sin.

“Ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” Colossians 3:3. “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.” Colossians 3:1. What things are where Christ is? Not a thing that has to do with sin. A very high standard? It couldn’t be higher. It is the “super-heavenlies” standard. It is the Christ standard. The things which are where Christ is are the things which are in Christ. And the believer is in Christ. The believer is raised with Christ. The believer is seated with Christ in the heavenlies. Because the exceeding great power God used to accomplish the resurrection of Christ is to us-ward who believe, the believer is exhorted to manifest that resurrection power in his life. “That I may know Him in the power of His resurrection.” Philippians 3:10.

It is one thing to be kept by the power of God through faith unto that glorious salvation at the coming of the Lord; it is another thing to day by day live in resurrection power.

As believers we fail to measure up to God’s standard, but we have no Divine authority to lower the standard to the level of our failures. When we would do good evil is present. The flesh lusteth against the Spirit and we may not do the things that we should. But the exceeding great power of God is available.

APPROPRIATION AND APPLICATION

Believers are exhorted to pray without ceasing. Quite a big order for one who has many other duties. But it is God’s order. And the principle is always, “Be it unto you according to your faith.”

The believer is exhorted to study, to present, to resist, to let, to hope, to overcome, to live, to watch, to be vigilant and sober, to seek. Then there are many negative exhortations.

He is to put on the whole armour of God. He is to witness and work. He is to walk in the Spirit and make no provisions for the flesh. He is to yield himself to God and his members as instruments of righteousness. He is to put on the new man and to put off the old man. There is to be no let-up and no let-down; no unoccupied moments; no surrender to Satan or self; no compromise; but constant abiding in Christ, in fellowship and communion, yielded every moment to the Holy Spirit, saying with Paul, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”

The believer is instructed to abstain from all appearances of evil. He is exhorted to keep himself unspotted from the world. “Love not the world; neither the things of the world.” In fact there are several hundred admonitions, injunctions, orders, warnings, beseechings and rules for his Christian conduct.

Such is the price of victory. Paul practiced what he preached. How are we getting along? Our sufficiency is of God.

We are protected and shielded by His Power! But, in order to truly maximize the reality of our Redemption, we do well to meditate on what it means to be KEPT by God’s Power, and HOW! The central theme of these opening verses of Peter‘s first epistle is: Thanksgiving for our Salvation and Imperishable Inheritance. Our inheritance is prepared and kept for us, as we are for it. What keeps it imperishable, apart from its eternal nature, is the infinite Power of God! This Power is anchored in the Triune Fullness of God: Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the FATHER, through sanctification of the SPIRIT, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of JESUS CHRIST: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied” (v.2a).

We who believe can count on God’s guarding and preserving Power, while earnestly awaiting the perfection of our salvation, when our spirits shall join our perfected bodies in the presence of Christ! Yes, in this process, manifold trials will manifest. The best diamonds take longer in cutting and polishing. But, after all, compared to the eternity before us, the trials are short-lived, and there is a purpose for each, including the Full Experience of Christianity – Hope (v.3), Faith (v.7), and Love (v.8).  These three blend in the Joy that is unspeakable and full of the glory! What a privilege is ours – to receive on the platform of Mercy, what the prophets enquired and searched diligently after, what angels are deeply desirous of and interested in – that glorious salvation which God has declared unto humankind in the gospel, and by which we have been redeemed (v.11-12).

To be kept by the Power of God through faith means that God is guarding our inheritance, and shielding us as in a fortress, from anything that might cause our inheritance – our eternal life with Him forever – to suffer. We’re being protected by His Power. Think if it: How powerful is God? How able is He? He is Creator of the universe. He is the God who raised Christ from the dead. He is the God of all flesh and the Father of Spirits (Jer.32:27; Heb.12:9). We’re being kept by God’s power through faith. It’s not our faith that is powerful. It is God. But it is through faith that this relationship with God began and is maintained. We trusted Him to save, and we continue to trust that He will do everything necessary to keep us in His love!

By God’s grace, through faith, we have been saved (Eph.2: 8-9), from the eternal penalty of sin. We are being saved from the power of sin, growing more and more like Jesus. And, we will be saved from the presence of sin, in Heaven. Though we have a foretaste already, our salvation will be fully revealed in His Presence. Even in trials of faith, we have every reason to rejoice. The mystery of God’s plan has been revealed to us in Christ! Our responsibility is to live like the holy ones of God we already are by obeying Him now, loving each other earnestly, and placing all of our hope in the endless life to come!

Lord, may we be KEPT BY YOUR POWER through Faith, for Perfect Redemption and the endless life, in Jesus name.

The Gospel is power in the hand of God," said Haldane. "It is power . . . which God employs to accomplish a certain end."

The Good News of Jesus Christ is the power of God unto salvation (1 Cor. 1:22-25). Some people still think it is nonsense and foolishness, but to those who are being saved it is the power of God unto salvation. That is why I don't stop and argue with people about it; I just preach it. God the Holy Spirit is the greatest apologist; He can take care of Himself. Everyone is dead spiritually and mentally and personally, until He awakens the spirit and brings man to believe on Christ and receive His new life.

"Salvation" is a comprehensive term. In this passage the words "life," especially eternal life" and "salvation" has the same meaning. The sinner who is justified by faith will live. He alone is righteous in God's sight. The sinner who is declared by God to be righteous or justified will be saved. Eternal life begins with justification and continues throughout eternity. Salvation includes sanctification and reaches its consummation in final glory when we stand before God in Christ Jesus.

It is the power to change people's lives

We were dead in trespasses and sins. The wages of sin is death. Sin and depravity paints an ugly picture in the Bible and in real life. Read for yourself the first three chapters of Paul's letter to the Romans.

Sinners need the Savior who can deliver us from our sins. I do not want to be reincarnated into a future life of sin and depravity. I want the power of the Gospel to change my life right now and be found with new life in Christ for now and eternity.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ reveals God's way of righteousness. It is not a way determined by man, or by an external consideration, but by God. It is what is right, conformable to right, pertaining to right as God determines it to be right. God is the standard. Paul uses the concept of righteousness in the Old Testament, and it is a key word in Romans.

The Hebrew idea of right and wrong was put in forensic terms. In the Hebrew mind the right and wrong is settled before a judge. It is not in the sense of a moral excellence as much as a legal standing before God. The Hebrew word "righteous" (saddiq) means simply "in the right."  The word "wicked" (rasha) means "in the wrong."  Therefore, for the Hebrew Jehovah is always in the right because He is not only sovereign but self-consistent. He can never contradict Himself. He is the source of righteousness.

God is the goal and standard of integrity. It is His norm that man must live up to. God is always righteous, and we are righteous only when we are in the right relationship to God.

How does a person stand right in the sight of a holy God? God vindicates His own righteousness when He declares the believing sinner righteous based on the atoning work of Jesus Christ. God has revealed His personal righteousness in the Law and in the person and work of Jesus Christ. It is a declared righteousness. God declares the believing sinner to be in a right relationship with Himself. God acquits the believing sinner based on the substitutionary atoning death of Jesus Christ for that sinner.

It is good to remind ourselves the distinction Paul places on justification, sanctification and glorification in his understanding of salvation. Failure to do so leads to confusion in the Christian life. By justification by faith Paul means the initial act of God's saving grace when we put our faith in Christ as our Savior. God puts the person who believes in a right relationship with Himself. Sanctification follows and continuously works in our lives. Glorification is that final day when we stand complete in Christ before God the Father. Justification by faith is the simple response of the believing heart to the Word of God in Jesus Christ. Salvation depends not on sacraments, not what is done by any priest, or individual, but on what Christ has done for the believing sinner. This teaching in God's Word sets every individual face to face before a holy God and forces us to deal with our sin and depravity God's way.

Omnipotent power of God

The apostle Paul teaches us the gospel is the inherent, omnipotent power of God operating in the salvation of the sinner who believes on Christ. The gospel is God's power resulting in salvation to the one who believes on the saving work of Christ. The gospel is the power of God. This power of God is demonstrated by what it does. It is divine energy in itself. It is the work of God in the sinner. The good news of salvation is energized by the Holy Spirit. The gospel is the message which the Holy Spirit in sovereign grace makes operative in the heart of the believing sinner who is elected to salvation before the foundation of the universe.

Take a few moments and look back over your life. Draw a mental time line from the day you were born up until today. Can you pick a time when God came into your life and changed you? Was there a time when He put a hunger in your heart for more of Him? Was there a time when the Holy Spirit put a hungering and thirsting in your heart for God's righteousness? Was there a time when you became acutely aware that one day you would have to stand before a holy and righteous God who will not tolerate sin in His presence? Did it make you so unbearably uncomfortable that a Godly fear grasped your soul? Is there a time and place where you know beyond a shadow of doubt that the Holy Spirit brought you to a sense of spiritual life and birth? Have you been born spiritually? Have you been born a second time?

What was your life like before you put your faith in Him? What changes have taken place in your life since that day? Is there a difference between your life before you believed on Christ and since then? Has the Holy Spirit put a hunger in your heart to become more like Jesus Christ? What was your life like before Christ came into your life? What changes has He brought into your personal life since then?

Humanism doesn't have the power to change a depraved life

Philosophy of the new age movements, humanism and socialism cannot change a depraved heart. Only God can raise the dead!

The gospel is not advice to good people. It is not a message to sinners suggesting that they lift themselves up by their bootstraps. It is power that lifts them up out of the condemnation and guilt of sin by giving them spiritual life. Paul does not say that the gospel brings power but that it is God's power to save sinners. It is the power of God at work in the believing sinner energizing and giving God's kind of life. When the gospel enters the sinner's life, it is as thought the very fire of God had come upon him and He gives eternal life. The result of the power of God in a sinner's life is salvation. It is altogether God's work, not something man does.

The apostle Paul makes it absolutely clear the message of the gospel is the power of God unto salvation. Faith comes by hearing. God saves the sinner through the message of the gospel. God's power is operative unto salvation through the gospel alone. It is the gospel that is God's power unto salvation.

The writer of Hebrews tells us the word of God is living and powerful (cf. Heb. 4:12). Use the Word in the presentation of the Gospel because it is the omnipotence of God working unto salvation.

THE PLAN OF THE GOSPEL

 "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "But the righteous man shall live by faith" (Romans 1:16-17).

Salvation is for everyone who believes

The gospel is universal, but it is not universalism. It is available to everyone who will call upon His name and believe on Jesus Christ for salvation. However, it does not teach that everyone will be saved regardless of what they believe. All religious roads do not lead to heaven. Some will take you to hell. The restriction is indicated by the words "who believe." Salvation is not the possession of any unbeliever, or someone who believes in a false god. Each person must make it his own by an act of faith.

However, it is not man's faith that gives the gospel its power. The apostle Paul makes it clear that it is the power of the gospel that makes it possible for the sinner to believe. It is the power of God that is at work in the saving gospel.

The power of God unto salvation is applied through faith. It is "to everyone that believes." This is the foundation-principle in Paul's life. "The just shall live by faith." It is the person who is righteous by faith that will live.

The only kind of righteousness God offers to the sinner is His own righteousness. When the sinner accepts God's righteousness he is assured that God will stand behind it for all eternity. Therefore the sinner will stand in a right relationship with God forever. The sinner's guilt has been taken away for all eternity because of the work of Christ on the cross. But the saved sinner also is clothed with the positive righteousness of Jesus Christ. This is his new standing with God. It is an eternal relationship with God in grace. The work of Christ saves and keeps the sinner saved for all eternity.

However, we must keep clearly in mind that the same righteousness of God that saves the believing sinner also condemns the unbelieving sinner for all eternity who rejects God's grace and mercy.

The source of our righteousness is the grace of God, and the means is by faith in Jesus Christ.

Salvation is only to those who believe on Christ

The gospel is the power of God because it leads you to Jesus Christ. The plan of God is "there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). Jesus said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me" (John 14:6).

The reason for such a plan is very simple. Jesus Christ is the only person who was ever qualified to die as a substitute in the place of another person. If you and I died for sins we would only be paying the price for our own sinfulness. It would be impossible for us to die in the place of another to pay for their sin debt. We do not have the righteousness to ransom anyone, including ourselves. "He [God] made Him [Jesus Christ] who knew no sin to be sin [a sin-offering] on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him" (2 Corinthians 5:21). He was the only person qualified to die in your place, and pay to redeem you.

The apostle Paul tells us in Romans 1:17, "For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "But the righteous man shall live by faith."

There is only one way we as sinful persons can ever stand just before a righteous and holy God. Paul uses the figure of the judgment bar of God. Justification is a forensic term. It is employed always in a legal sense. A prisoner is brought to the court of justice to be tried. In God's Supreme Court we are all tried and found guilty. No other appeal can be made. In human courts the King or Queen, or President can grant a pardon, but they cannot justify the guilty sinner. We can be pardoned, but not even royalty or the highest legal authority can wash our character clean. The criminal is just as much a criminal when he is pardoned as he was before.

But before the Lord God we who are proven guilty can be justified. Even though the verdict has been brought against us, guilty as charged, yet God can justify us.

How can a just God continue to be just and justify the believing sinner? There is only one way and that is what the gospel of Jesus Christ is all about. Jesus Christ, our substitute took all our guilt upon Himself and died for us. He changed places with us. Remember, He paid our sin debt. He ransomed us. Because the penalty has been paid in full God can declare us acquitted. Justified! Set free! "The wages of sin is death." But Jesus Christ put me aside, and stands in my place. When the guilty plea is entered, Jesus Christ says, "Guilty, Your Honor." He takes my guilt to be His own guilt. The One who was without sin became my representative for sin and died in my place. Jesus Christ was executed in my place at the cross.

Jesus says, "Punish Me. I have placed My righteousness on that person, and I have taken that person's sin on Myself. Father, punish Me, and consider that person to have been Me. Let Him reign in heaven; let Me suffer for Him." Now God can save us because the penalty has been paid in full. Christ says, "I am his substitute. The believing sinner shall take My place; I will take his or hers."

The moment you believe on Christ God the Father looks at you as if you were Christ. He accepts you and me as if we were His only-begotten Son, full of grace and truth. He gives to us the crown of life in heaven. He takes us to His bosom forever and ever. We are "being justified freely by His grace, through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus."

The moment you believe on Christ you are pardoned at once. The believing sinner stands a guiltless man or woman in the sight of God. He ceases to be guilty in God's esteem. To be "justified by faith" does not mean to be "made" righteous, but to be "declared" righteous. God declares the believing sinner acquitted on the basis of the substitutionary death of Jesus. God changes people in the crucial point of their relationship with Him. He removes the barrier that separates man from Him. It is an act of grace. The creator God accepts us as His own simply through faith in His Son. In justification God does not change us, but accepts us as we are. He does change us once we have been accepted, but this new acceptance with Him comes first. Progressive sanctification takes place over a lifetime as we learn to live by faith in Christ and walk in the Holy Spirit. If you believe in Christ He will not let you live as your flesh desires. His Spirit will constrain you to mortify its affections and lusts. If He gives you the grace to make you believe, He will give you the grace to live a holy life afterward. If He gives you faith, He gives you good works afterward. Our standing with God is by grace through faith. This is the foundation basis for everything else that happens in our Christian life.

Saving faith

What is this saving faith? It is the attitude in which we acknowledge our complete insufficiency to gain a right relationship with God, and we rely utterly on the all-sufficiency of God in Christ. We cease all self-assertion, even by way of effort after righteousness, and trust in Christ alone to make us right with God (Rom. 3:202224284:2-3135:1).

Moreover, something else wonder has taken place in God's court. The moment we believe we take Christ's robes of righteousness and are clothed in them. In the moment when Christ takes our sins, we take Christ's righteousness. When God now looks upon the sinner who was dead in sins, He looks upon him with as much love and affection that He ever had for His only begotten Son. He takes away our filthy garments and clothes us in His royal raiment. That is imputation. If a man is to live in the presence of God, he must be clothed with the divine righteousness of Jesus Christ. Our filthy rags of self-righteousness are placed on Christ our substitute, and His garments of perfect righteousness are placed on us. Christ takes our sins; we take Christ's righteousness. The basis is our substitution. We go free justified by His grace because God can find no fault with His own imputed righteousness. The redemptive work of Christ is the ground upon which the righteousness of God is "reckoned" or "imputed" to the believing sinner.

I love what C. H. Spurgeon once said, "Those who are once justified are justified irreversibly. As soon as a sinner takes Christ's place, and Christ takes the sinner's place, there is no fear of a second change. If Christ has once paid the debt, the debt is paid, and it will never be asked for again; if you are pardoned, you are pardoned once forever. God does not give a free pardon . . . and then afterward retract it and punish man . . . He says, 'I have punished Christ; you may go free.' And after that we may 'rejoice in hope of the glory of God,' that 'being justified by faith we have peace with God, through our Lord Jesus Christ.' . . . . In the moment they believe, their sins being imputed to Christ, they cease to be theirs, and Christ's righteousness is imputed to them and accounted theirs, so that they are accepted."

Has the great exchange taken place in your life? The person who is made right by faith in Christ will live by faith in Him. To be justified by faith is to enter into a new relationship with God, not because of the works of his hands, but because of his utter faith in what the love of God has done through the death of Jesus Christ.

No one can summarize this great truth better than A. M. Toplady in "Rock of Ages."

"Not the labors of my hands,

Can fulfill thy law's demands;

Could my zeal no languor know,

Could my tears forever flow,

All for sin could not atone;

Thou must save, and thou alone."

Title:  Romans 1:14-17 The Power of God

The Power Belongs To God

Everything originates from the Father including this miraculous power that as we will see he has given to us through his Son via the Holy Spirit.

Mat 6:13 – And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, (miraculous mighty works power) and the glory, forever. Amen.

1Co 15:24 – Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power. (miraculous mighty works power)

Jesus Demonstrated This Power

Jesus was approved of God among you by miracles, wonders, and signs. The word approved means to show, demonstrate, to point out, to prove an argument.

Mar 5:30 – And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue (miraculous mighty works power) had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?

Mar 6:2 – And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works (miraculous mighty works power) are wrought by his hands?

Luk 4:14 – And Jesus returned in the power (miraculous mighty works power) of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.

Luk 19:37 – And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works (miraculous mighty works power) that they had seen;

Act 2:22 – Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles (miraculous mighty works power) and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:

Act 10:38 – How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: (miraculous mighty works power) who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

Virgin Birth Through Power

This is also a type of the born again experience. Mary was a virgin and Jesus’ birth involved no man. He was born of the Spirit, from above. Through Jesus we are born of the Spirit and also called the children of God.

Luk 1:35 – And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power (miraculous mighty works power) of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

Do Not Ignore This Power

The power is evident and has been displayed for all to see. Warnings of ignoring it are highlighted with Woe, Woe, brought down, etc. The power of God is to lead us to repentence.

Mat 11:20 – Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works (miraculous mighty works power) were done, because they repented not:

Mat 11:21 – Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, (miraculous mighty works power) which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

Mat 11:23 – And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, (miraculous mighty works power) which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

Luk 10:13 – Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works (miraculous mighty works power) had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

Don’t Allow Unbelief To Deprive You Of This Power

So much blessing and healing could have been had but unbelief can not see any mighty work.

Mat 13:54 – And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? (miraculous mighty works power)

Mat 13:58 – And he did not many mighty works (miraculous mighty works power) there because of their unbelief.

Mar 6:5 – And he could there do no mighty work, (miraculous mighty works power) save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.

Mar 9:1 – And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power. (miraculous mighty works power)

Don’t Mistake Where This Power Comes From

As Peter said in Acts 3:16 – And Jesus name through faith in Jesus name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by Jesus hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.

Mat 14:2 – And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works (miraculous mighty works power) do shew forth themselves in him.

Mar 6:14 – And king Herod heard of him; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works (miraculous mighty works power) do shew forth themselves in him.

Act 3:12 – And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power (miraculous mighty works power) or holiness we had made this man to walk?

Both the Scriptures And The Power Are Important

There is a huge trend developing of whole Church groups proclaiming to follow Jesus without the need for the Bible. There can be no such thing because the scriptures speak of him.

Mat 22:29 – Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power (miraculous mighty works power) of God.

Mar 12:24 – And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power (miraculous mighty works power) of God?

Jesus Gives Us This Power Through The Holy Spirit

There are signs that follow believers. Just as God approved his Son by miracles, signs, and wonders so too the Church which is the body of his Son.

Luk 24:49 – And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power (miraculous mighty works power) from on high.

Act 1:8 – But ye shall receive power, (miraculous mighty works power) after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Act 4:7 – And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, (miraculous mighty works power) or by what name, have ye done this?

Act 6:8 – And Stephen, full of faith and power, (miraculous mighty works power) did great wonders and miracles among the people.

Act 8:13 – Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles (miraculous mighty works power) and signs which were done.

Act 19:11 – And God wrought special miracles (miraculous mighty works power) by the hands of Paul:

Rom 15:19 – Through mighty (miraculous mighty works power) signs and wonders, by the power (miraculous mighty works power) of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ.

2Co 12:12 – Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds. (miraculous mighty works power)

2Ti 1:7 – For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, (miraculous mighty works power) and of love, and of a sound mind.

God Gives Us Talents/Abilities That Are Powerful

The word ability in the parable of the talents means power. Jesus did not leave us comfortless/powerless before he went on his journey.

Mat 25:15 – And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; (miraculous mighty works power) and straightway took his journey.

The Powers Of Heaven Shall be Shaken

There powers of heaven shall be shaken. Can be literal and also can be political (Joseph’s drean his brothers were the stars that bowed dowen to him – his father and mother the sun and the moon)

Mat 24:29 – Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers (miraculous mighty works power) of the heavens shall be shaken:

Mar 13:25 – And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers (miraculous mighty works power) that are in heaven shall be shaken.

Luk 21:26 – Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers (miraculous mighty works power) of heaven shall be shaken.

The Return Of The Lord Shall Be With Power

What a miricalous event. The day is coming when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven.

Mat 24:30 – And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power (miraculous mighty works power) and great glory.

Mar 13:26 – And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power (miraculous mighty works power) and glory.

Mar 14:62 – And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, (miraculous mighty works power) and coming in the clouds of heaven.

Luk 21:27 – And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power (miraculous mighty works power) and great glory.

2Th 1:7 – And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty (miraculous mighty works power) angels,

Don’t Forbid Others

Sometimes we can allow our religion or rules to get in the way. The religious leaders were blind to a miraculous healing because Jesus did it on the Sabbath day. It didn’t fit their religion. If miracles are happening praise God.

Mar 9:39 – But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle (miraculous mighty works power) in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.

John The Baptist (In Type Us) Led People To Christ With This Power

As John we are to make ready a people for the Lord. In the spirit and power. Baptising and turning the disobedient to the wisdom of the just (Jesus).

Luk 1:17 – And he shall go before him in the spirit and power (miraculous mighty works power) of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

This Power Heals

When the power of the Lord is present so is healing!

Luk 4:36 – And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power (miraculous mighty works power) he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.

Luk 5:17 – And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power (miraculous mighty works power) of the Lord was present to heal them.

Luk 6:19 – And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue (miraculous mighty works power) out of him, and healed them all.

Luk 8:46 – And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue (miraculous mighty works power) is gone out of me.

Jesus Gives His Disciples This Power

A forerunner of what he did on the day of Pentecost.

Luk 9:1 – Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power (miraculous mighty works power) and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.

Jesus Sits At The Right Hand Of Power

Jesus is risen from the dead and sits on the right hand of power and everything has been made subject to him.

Mat 26:64 – Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, (miraculous mighty works power) and coming in the clouds of heaven.

Luk 22:69 – Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power (miraculous mighty works power) of God.

1Pe 3:22 – Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers (miraculous mighty works power) being made subject unto him.

His Word Is Power

The power of Gods word. He created the worlds by his word and his word upholds (carries, bears with patience) all things.

Heb 1:3 – Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, (miraculous mighty works power) when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

This Power Gives Witness To The Resurrection Of Jesus

Everytime someone is filled with the Holy Ghost it proves the resurrection of Jesus.

Act 4:33 – And with great power (miraculous mighty works power) gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.

Rom 1:4 – And declared to be the Son of God with power, (miraculous mighty works power) according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:

Salvation Is A Miracle Through This Power

It took a miraculous mighty work to save us. The death and resurrection of Christ. The infilling of the Holy Spirit – is just too wonderful to comprehend.

Rom 1:16 – For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power (miraculous mighty works power) of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

His Power Is Seen In Creation

No excuses. His eternal, everlasting, never-ending power can be seen form the creation.

Rom 1:20 – For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power (miraculous mighty works power) and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

God Has Demonstrated His Power

The power has a purpose – to declare the name of Jesus throughout all the earth. You shall be witnesses unto me.

Rom 9:17 – For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power (miraculous mighty works power) in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.

This Power Of The Holy Ghost Leads To Hope, Joy, And Peace

These things come through ther power of the Holy Ghost.

Rom 15:13 – Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power (miraculous mighty works power) of the Holy Ghost.

Once again our salvation is a miracle.

1Co 1:18 – For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power (miraculous mighty works power) of God.

Christ Is The Power Of God

Jesus is the power and wisdom of God.

1Co 1:24 – But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power (miraculous mighty works power) of God, and the wisdom of God.

Eph 1:21 – Far above all principality, and power, and might, (miraculous mighty works power) and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:

We Preach Not Just With Words But In Demonstration Of The Spirit And Power

Clever speeches and words are not where our faith is based. Our faith is in the power of God. Religion with no power is just a form of Godliness – it is not real.

1Co 2:4 – And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: (miraculous mighty works power)

1Co 4:19 – But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will, and will know, not the speech of them which are puffed up, but the power. (miraculous mighty works power)

1Th 1:5 – For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, (miraculous mighty works power) and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.

2Pe 1:16 – For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power (miraculous mighty works power) and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

2Ti 3:5 – Having a form of godliness, but denying the power (miraculous mighty works power) thereof: from such turn away.

1Co 2:5 – That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power (miraculous mighty works power) of God.

1Co 4:20 – For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power. (miraculous mighty works power)

The Same Power Raised Christ From The Dead

Incredible power and we are to live by this power.

1Co 6:14 – And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power. (miraculous mighty works power)

1Co 15:43 – It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: (miraculous mighty works power)

2Co 13:4 – For though he was crucified through weakness, yet he liveth by the power (miraculous mighty works power) of God. For we also are weak in him, but we shall live with him by the power (miraculous mighty works power) of God toward you.

Phl 3:10 – That I may know him, and the power (miraculous mighty works power) of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

The Church Is A Place Of Power

The Church is an outreach center. A place of power. Where people can see signs and wonders.

1Co 12:10 – To another the working of miracles; (miraculous mighty works power) to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

1Co 12:28 – And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, (miraculous mighty works power) then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

1Co 12:29 – Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? (miraculous mighty works power)

Heb 2:4 – God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, (miraculous mighty works power) and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

Speaking In Tongues Is Power

1Co 14:11 – Therefore if I know not the meaning (miraculous mighty works power) of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.

The Law Gives Sin Power

Sin gets its strength/power from the law. It has no strength against the blood of Christ and grace.

1Co 15:56 – The sting of death is sin; and the strength (miraculous mighty works power) of sin is the law.

This Power Is Not Of Us

This power is in plain ordinary vessels. Great power from ordinary people. No big shots – it is not your power.

2Co 4:7 – But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power (miraculous mighty works power) may be of God, and not of us.

It Is Part Of Approving Ourselves As The Ministers Of God

The power of God is involved in ministry.

This Power Comes By The Hearing Of Faith

Just believe!

The Exceeding Greatness Of His Power

It is exceeding great power. So that’s power that is greater than great power.

Eph 1:19 – And what is the exceeding greatness of his power (miraculous mighty works power) to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,

Ministry Is Given To Us By This Power

Ministry is special. Great power makes you a minister.

Eph 3:7 – Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power. (miraculous mighty works power)

This Power Strengthens With Might Our Inner Man

One of the meaning for power is inner strength but this power and inner strength has been gicen to us of God – it is not our own strength.

Eph 3:16 – That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might (miraculous mighty works power) by his Spirit in the inner man;

2Ti 1:8 – Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power (miraculous mighty works power) of God;
